Sophie Barr · Body Control Pilates Instructor

Pilates that is personal,
not just a class

I have always been passionate about exercise and wellbeing. After having my children I made the decision to leave my career in sales and follow my true calling: teaching Pilates.

I began my teaching journey in 2011, gaining my Level 3 Pilates Matwork Certification with Body Control Pilates in 2012. Since then I have had the privilege of watching many people transform how they move, feel and carry themselves.

In 2023 I became a Body Control Pilates Supervising Teacher, mentoring new teachers through their training. This is one of the most key teaching roles within the Body Control Pilates organisation and reflects a deep commitment to the highest standards of instruction.

I believe strongly that we are a work in progress. No matter how many years of experience you have, there is always something new to learn and a deeper understanding to gain. That commitment to continuing development is something I bring to every class.

Sophie is a wonderful instructor and her classes are excellent. Every class is different and always well planned. We use a variety of equipment each week which makes each class fun, enjoyable and challenging. I have been attending Sophie's classes for over six years and she has done so much to improve my posture and flexibility. I would wholeheartedly recommend Sophie to anyone thinking about starting Pilates.

Rosalyn Lane · Verified Google Review
★★★★★

Sophie's classes are excellent. Varied and fun, always geared to the levels of class members and meticulously observed so that individual corrections are made. Her demonstrations are clear and she is able to show the difference between correct and incorrect positions. But mostly she makes everyone feel welcome and ensures we all have a good time whilst benefitting fully from an excellent Pilates programme.

to know before starting

What is Pilates?

+

Pilates is a holistic movement system that connects mind and body through controlled, precise exercise. Developed by Joseph Pilates, it trains the body to move with correct muscle activation, coordination and breath, developing a deep awareness of alignment and posture. Whether practising a gentle or more dynamic flow, Pilates is deliberate and focused. Over time it improves posture, increases joint mobility, develops greater body awareness, and improves balance and alignment. It strengthens the whole body from the inside out, which is why it benefits everyone from complete beginners to elite athletes, and from young adults to those well into their later years. Pilates should not feel selective. It is for every body.

Why Body Control Pilates?

+

Body Control Pilates is a world leading education provider for Pilates teaching and a founder member of the Society for the Pilates Method. The exercises are carefully adapted so that any body can safely build a solid movement foundation and progress at their own pace. With growing demand for Pilates teachers, some providers offer training that spans only a few weeks. When choosing a class it is always worth asking about your teacher's qualifications. Sophie is verified on the Body Control Pilates Teacher Register.

I am a complete beginner. Will I be out of my depth?

+

Not at all. Sophie will speak with you before you join to make sure you are placed in the right class at the right level. Gentle Flow (beginner and improver level) classes are available and Sophie offers modifications throughout every session so that everyone can work at their own pace. Pilates really can benefit you irrespective of age and ability.

I have lower back pain. Is Pilates suitable?

+

Yes. Sophie is a qualified Back4Good Practitioner, specifically trained to help people with low back pain using safe, tailored Pilates based exercises. This specialisation is endorsed by BackCare UK and leading medical practitioners. Please mention your back pain when you get in touch and Sophie will advise on the most appropriate approach for you.

I have Osteoporosis. Can I do Pilates?

+

Yes. Sophie holds a specialist qualification in Pilates for Bone Health, developed by Body Control Pilates who have worked with the Royal Osteoporosis Society. There are certain exercises that are contraindicated for Osteoporosis, and Sophie will ensure appropriate modifications are in place for you. Pilates helps maintain bone strength and is safe and beneficial for those with the condition.

Why is there no online booking system?

+

Sophie does not offer an automated online booking system because she believes it is important to know each person attending her class before they arrive. A brief conversation before you join means Sophie understands your goals, health history and any current injuries or medical considerations. This allows her to place you in the right class and offer the right modifications for you from day one. It is part of the personal approach that makes Sophie's classes different.

Do I need to book in advance?

+

Yes. Classes run in blocks of 6 to 8 weeks and payment is made as a block booking to keep numbers controlled and the classes personal. Contact Sophie directly to enquire about availability and current pricing.

Do you offer Solo, Duo or Small Group sessions?

+

Yes. Solo sessions are private one to one sessions between you and Sophie. Duo sessions are for you and one other person. Small Group sessions are bespoke private sessions for groups of 4 to 10 people, priced individually for each group. All private sessions are fully tailored to the participants and can be arranged to suit your schedule. They are particularly well suited to beginners, people returning after injury, or any group with specific shared goals.

What do I wear or bring?

+

Wear comfortable, stretchy clothing that allows free movement. Sophie provides mats, head cushions and any small equipment used in class so you do not need to bring anything. Some clients prefer to use their own mat, which is entirely fine.

What if I miss a class?

+

Classes are sold as block bookings and Sophie asks for at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel a session. Where notice is given, Sophie will always do her best to find you an alternative slot within the block, subject to availability. Please note that classes missed without 24 hours notice cannot generally be carried over or refunded, as your place has been held for you. For illness or genuinely unforeseen circumstances Sophie will endeavour to find a solution at her discretion.
